Revival Wearable Art Series – Artist Statement

When Adam and Eve committed the first sin, they felt shame in their nakedness.  We read in Genesis 3:7 (ESV) “Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.”  This was the beginning of clothing.  In verse 21 of the same chapter we read, “And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.”  Notice that God did not say, “Good job on the fig leaf loincloths.”  Man’s attempt to cover their shame was not acceptable to God.  God provided the acceptable covering for their sin-- which required the shedding of blood since they were made of “skins.”  This blood spilling is a foreshadowing of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.  His blood was shed to redeem sinners, to “cover” their sins since they could not provide an acceptable payment themselves.  No human works can cover, or pay for, sin, no matter how creative the design with fig leaves.

John 1:1 and 14 read, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  Jesus Christ is the “Word of God” Who became human to pay for, to “cover”, our sin.  The Word is our cover, our clothing over our shame.  In this wearable art series I am using the “written” Word of God as a covering for nakedness.  The Word is our clothing.

If you keep reading in the Scriptures you find that sin continues, indeed to this day, and therefore, our need for covering.  I created these human scaled wearable sculptures using a variety of materials and techniques but all feature the written Word of God.  Since we all have this need of Christ’s redemptive sin-covering, every person should find at least one sculpture that “speaks” to him.  And to him who is given eyes to see, may God’s “garment of skins” be given.
